Synopsis
The 16th century scholar Joseph Scaliger used the solar cycle, lunar cycle and Roman indiction cycle to fix the first day of his chronological system at January 1, 4713 B.C. The Julian day system simplifies date arithmetic and has been adopted in astronomy and other fields.
