Badalia, a native of London's East End, has been deserted by her abusive husband, but finds occupation administering a small charitable fund. She proves to be discerning, capable, determined and honest in the work; but these qualities do her no good when her husband returns, demands the money she has in her charge, and beats her to death when she won't hand it over.

This story was first published in Harper's Weekly, 15 and 22 November 1890.
