In the 1912 collection "with illustrations by H. R. Millar and Spencer Pryse" (per title page) examination reveals that Pryse is represented only by three illustrations of this story (facing pp. 98, 109, 123). None is clearly signed or dated.
In The Strand Magazine Pryse illustrated The Magic City by Nesbit, an 11-part 1910 serial, and some works by other writers. Probably this story was first published in another magazine with his drawings. (Six of 12 stories in the 1912 collection are unillustrated and Millar's illustrations of the other five are earlier dated or known to be earlier published in The Strand.)
