The adventure-seeking rural teenager Connie takes to picking up boys at a restaurant. She attracts the attention of a man in a gold convertible, Arnold Friend. He arrives at her house, and proves to be older than she thought and very frightening. He tries at length to talk her into getting into his car with him.
Author's comment: "Arnold Friend is a fantastic figure: he is Death, he is the 'elf-knight' of the ballads, he is the Imagination, he is a Dream, he is a Lover, a Demon, and all that."
