The Weathermonger

Peter Dickinson

First published 1968

Series Changes #1

After the Changes - From the Twentieth Century to the Dark Ages overnight - such was fate that befell Britain five years from now. Machines were shunned and witchcraft had become the order of the day. Superstition and all the narrowness of the medieval era was the way of the populace and those who believed in science and mechanics fled the island.
To this strangely changed land, two return to see the source of the blight that had altered the natural laws. Geoffrey, the condemned weathermonger of Weymouth, and his sister, slip back, take over a still-functioning Rolls Royce Silver Ghost and follow the lightning to a terrifying confrontation between myth and science.
Here is a most unusual novel, suggestive at times of Tolkien, at other times of L. Sprague de Camp, but always a gripping adventure. (from the back cover of the DAW Books first printing)

 • 3rd of the trilogy "in order of internal chronology the novels" --SFE3, biographical entry by Nicholls, Clute, and Langford
 • Revised 1969 SFE3 reports chapters 10 and 11 revised 1969. The Children's/YA page of the author's website implies that there are some (slight?) differences between the original/early UK versions and the US versions, although recent UK editions follow the US. --[clarkmci]
 • Weather Monger ? Some sites list this title as Weather Monger or The Weather Monger. The front jacket cover of the Delacorte hardcover edition has "The / Weather- / Monger" on three separate lines. It's not known how the title is formatted on the title page but the spine of this edition has The Weathermonger meaning it's likely there are no publications that use "Weather" and "Monger" as separate words in the title.
