First published no later than the 1962 Simon & Schuster edition of The Annotated Snark, perhaps preceded and followed by full-page illustrations from the original drawings by Henry Holiday.
At the head of the poem (viewed in the Penguin ed. "Reprinted with revisions 1973"), Martin Gardner notes,
"J. A. Lindon, whose name has been mentioned many times in the notes, is the author of the following fit."
One paragraph from a letter by Lindon follows that, and another line by Gardner precedes the poem itself (18 stanzas with two Lindon footnotes).
