The Mysterious Horseman (excerpt)

Rev. Bourchier Wrey Savile

First published 1898
Type Short Fiction
Length Short Story

The 1898 anthology story "The Mysterious Horseman" was published in Apparitions: A Narrative of Facts (Longmans, 1874), by Rev. Bourchier Wrey Savile, M.A., as Chapter XVI, "The Mysterious Horseman", pp. 189-97 (viewed at HathiTrust)--except that the 1898 version omits the first two paragraphs, which introduce the story as reprinted: [1] "The Traethodydd, or Essayist, a Welsh periodical for 1853, contains ..." [2] "I think it will be best to allow Mr. Jones to relate the incident in his own words, as he was often wont to do, ..." The Mysterious Horseman story as reprinted in 1898 then begins in the third paragraph--in the voice of Mr. Jones but without quotation marks, same as the 1898 text.

(From "Apparition: A Narrative of the Facts." By the Rev. Bourchier Wrey Savile.) That is the entire annotation in the 1898 anthology (and the 1981 Castle Books reprint) Contents list, below the line (title and page number). Similarly in the story heading, with the footnote (quote): '"Apparitions" was published in 1880.

One of the few 1898 Acknowledgments is "The Mysterious Horseman, and The Vision of Marshal Blücher. By kind permission of W. A. Savile, Esq."
