This is an excerpt from Traditions of Edinburgh in its 1847 ed., "A New Edition, much amended". It is from the third chapter, "The West Bow", in turn from pp. 32-38. The 1847 Contents list displays "Major Weir" among about 20 plausible headings under "The West Bow 28", but the implied sections are not distinguished in the text by headings or whitespace, etc. The words "major weir" do not appear at all in the 1st ed., 1825. (Both eds. have been viewed at HathiTrust, relying on the text search feature.)
(From " Traditions of Edinburgh," by Robert Chambers.) That is the entire annotation in the 1898 anthology (and the 1981 Castle Book reprint) Contents list, below the line (title and page number); identically in the story heading.
