Marshal Blücher (excerpt)

Rev. Bourchier Wrey Savile

First published 1898
Type Short Fiction
Length Short Story

The 1898 anthology story "Marshal Blücher" was published in Apparitions: A Narrative of Facts (Longmans, 1874), by Rev. Bourchier Wrey Savile, M.A., as Chapter XIX, "Marshal Blucher", pp. 221-30 (viewed at HathiTrust)--except that the 1898 version omits the first three paragraphs, which introduce the story as reprinted: [1] "Before recording the extraordinary incident ... " [2] "Lady Clementina Davies, in her Recollections, mentions General Von Gravan, who had fought at Waterloo, narrated to her the following story ... " [3] "The Prussian General Von Gravan ... " The Marshal Blücher story as reprinted in 1898 then begins in the fourth paragraph.
  • The 1874 Apparitions uses "Blucher" throughout. The 1898 Eerie Book (1898) uses "Blücher" throughout.
  • • (From " Apparition: A Narrative of the Facts." By the Rev. Bourchier Wrey Savile.) That is the entire annotation in the 1898 (and the 1981 Castle Book reprint) anthology Contents list, below the line (title and page number). The second line of the story heading is identical with the footnote (quote): • "Apparitions" was published in 1880.
  • One of the few 1898 Acknowledgments is "The Mysterious Horseman, and The Vision of Marshal Blücher. By kind permission of W. A. Savile, Esq."
