In {{A|Peter Haining}}'s Gothic Tales of Terror this story is stated to be from a mysterious 1798 collection Tales from the Crypt-in the Style of 'The Monk'. However, in the 1844 collection Traditions & Legends of the Elf, the Fairy, & the Gnome, it is stated to be an original tale by an uncredited author.
