- First published in The Bulletin [Australian magazine] on 12 December 1896.
Included in Bush Studies in 1902.
Seems to have been titled "The Tramp" originally, but is "The Chosen One" in the copy of Bush Studies on Project Gutenberg Australia - [here]. (May 2015)
Although the note in Australian Horror Stories says it was "The Chosen One" first, then "The Tramp" in Bush Studies, Wikipedia & Austlit has it the other way around, with the version in Bush Studies having "with some previously excised scenes restored". Also, from the Austlit page, "An edition, also with the title, The Chosen Vessel, was privately printed" ("For private circulation only", possibly in 1900).
It has been reprinted in many anthologies; both titles have been used.
The version in Australian Horror Stories is possibly the original version or a later editing? - comparing the first page with that on Gutenberg, the version in Australian Horror Stories seems shorter.
