According to wikipedia, this story was adapted from the Estonian tale Kullaketrajad, from the collection Eestirahwa Ennemuistesedjutud (1866?)by Friedrich Kreutzwald . It was probably taken from the German translation Die Goldspinnerinnen in Ehstnische Märchen(1869), and is probably the other German story that was translated by Miss Sylvia Hunt for Andrew Lang`s Blue Fairy Book.
