Originally published in Popular Rhymes, Fireside Stories & Amusements of Scotland. Andrew Lang listed the source as Popular Traditions of Scotland in his preface for The Blue Fairy Book , possibly confusing this with Chambers' other book Traditions of Edinburgh.
