Reverend James Holloway is a vicar who effectively manipulates his congregation and whose vanity is fed by adoring female congregants. A titled man got a lower-class woman pregnant and asks the vicar to intervene, since she is asking him to marry her. The vicar does so in a strikingly cruel manner; when he later learns she committed suicide, his conscience is not troubled.
