A Midsummer Night's Dream

Arthur Rackham

First published 1908
Type Interior Art

Substantial review, The Manchester Guardian 1908-11-23 p4, "Christmas Books", under "Illustrated Reprints": "A book illustrated in colour by Mr. Arthur Rackham seems to be necessary to a modern Christmas, in the publisher's view. It is perhaps rather hard on Mr. Rackham ...". Short of Rackham's best work, especially as there are too many figures and landscapes that do not illustrate scenes in the play, "somewhat meaningless".

One of a series published every fall, perhaps every November. Meanwhile Hodder & Stoughton published a series of Christmas books illustrated by Edmund Dulac. This newspaper, The Observer, and The Scotsman, use "Christmas Books" heavily as an article title or heading, meaning books released or promoted for the holiday gift season without reference to their content.
