A young man finds an employment at an old lady's, where he is to edit her late husband's memoirs. He falls in love with her niece, only to discover that she is a younger version of the old woman, whose magic created this replica.

In Fuentes's arrangement of his works into a cycle which he calls "La edad del tiempo", Aura is designated as volume 1 of Part I (El mal del tiempo).
