From Twenty-Five Ghost Stories (1904- J.S. Ogilvie Publishing Company), edited by {{A|W. Bob Holland}}. Per E.F. Bleiler from The Guide to Supernatural Fiction, this story is attributed to Maupassant in some editions but is not actually his work. A slightly different version was published in the June 16, 1883 edition of The Sporting Times as a translation from the French.
