Ten years after the death of Thomas Covenant, Dr. Linden Avery, his companion at the end, is caretaker to Covenant's mentally ill wife, Joan. When Covenant and Joan's son, Roger, attains legal majority and demands Joan be released to his care Linden refuses, sensing something wrong about Roger. This results in her being shot apparently fatally and regaining consciousness in the Land once again, this time along with her adopted son Jeremiah, Joan, and Roger. Thousands of years have passed and the oppressive evil of Lord Foul has become the new normal, now with the added power of Joan's madness and Roger's evil. Linden must battle this evil, while at the same time finding Jeremiah and saving him from Lord Foul.
