The book has been described as "a parody of nineteenth-century utopianism", as satire, and as "humorous science fiction". Grandville's art, in particular, has been inspirational to the Surrealist movement, and later to many writers and artists of science fiction and fantasy.
- This book is driven by the art, with the story primarily coming from Grandville's art. The text is credited to Grandville, but is known to have been written by Taxile DeLord as an anonymous (and uncredited) co-author.
- Sources for the Delord credit include Google books and "Parody and Paratext in J.J. Grandville's Un autre monde", by Daniel Sipe, Neohelicon, Volume 37, Number 1, June 2010 , pp. 203-216(14), online version here.
