First published in Aunt Judy's Magazine, February and March 1870, pp. 205-10, 259-75, with one illustration by {{a|George Cruikshank}}. The March issue begins with this story, at the point where the fantasy begins, section "Under the Haycocks"; the issue frontispiece by Cruikshank illustrates it (pp. 258-59 viewed at HathiTrust). Ewing and Cruikshank are credited by name in the volume Contents and Illustrations.
