The events of the novel take place during the First World War in Prague. The main events are related to witchcraft on the magical Walpurgis night, when a transparency between the worlds opens, and for a certain time the usual cause-and-effect relationships cease to operate. Meyrink constructs the image of the cosmic Walpurgis night, which allows to explain the horror of the world war and the coming social revolution by the invasion of the human world by demonic otherworldly forces.
