A Study in Scarlet

Arthur Conan Doyle

First published February 1941
Type Novel
Series Sherlock Holmes Metaverse › Sherlock Holmes #1

  • First published in the periodical Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887, with a book publication the following year.
  • According to LeRoy Lad Panek in his book The Origins of the American Detective Story (McFarland, 2006, p 46) Sherlock Holmes uses a blood test that would not be invented for more than a decade later in 1900 by Paul Uhlenhuth. Thus giving this novel some proto-speculative content.
