This is the original version of this work and was first published in May 1957. The word count is around 27K. It's not to be confused with its significantly expanded version, which was first published by Ace in 1964 and is around 40K words. This version ends with the words "She smiled. "Does it?" But her bright eyes had given me my answer, and I never had to make up my mind again", while the expanded version ends with the words "I heard it, drew a deep breath and then put my arm around Cynara, calling to Adric to come and share it with me".
Note that some editions and some secondary sources claim that this work is a part of the {{S|Darkover}} series. According to {{SFE}}, it's only marginally related.
