Notes
- Story contains elements of the supernatural, cryptozoology and animal fantasy.
- {{Tr|Chi-chen Wang}}
- The story was published under the name Xizhou Sheng (西周生) and originates between 1618 and 1681 (late Ming or early Qing Dynasty China). Authorship of the story by Pu Songling was claimed in 1931 by Hu Shih, although this assertion has since been discredited. In the 'Translator's Preface' in Renditions (#17/18, Spring/Autumn 1982) the translator makes note of the discredited authorship claim but still published the story as by 'P'u Sung-Ling'.
