A mer-baby has been abandoned at the shore by his mother, "the silliest and vainest of all the Mermaids". A wise old stork hears his cries and listens to his story. Since the stork's business is to bring babies to families, he arranges to deliver this one to a human family who will love him. Everything goes well for awhile, until the mermaid begins searching for her baby.
