• The novella is a slightly revised version of the story "With the Night Mail" (itself slightly different in two 1905 magazine versions) augmented by "Extracts from the Contemporary Magazine in Which It Appeared"
  
  
• That "Contemporary Magazine in Which It Appeared" is from year 2000, according to the 1909 novella subtitle. The story had been published as from McClure's Magazine of 2025 (McClure's, Nov 1905) and as from The Windsor Magazine of 2147 (Windsor, Dec 1905).
• As first published in 1909 (apparently identical UK/US eds., no list of Contents), the "Extracts" span pp. [60]-[86] with these section title pages, where the section titles appear alone on the pages given here: • [60], Aerial Board of Control Bulletin • [64], Notes • [67], Correspondence • [72], Reviews • [78], Advertising Section (from a copy of the US ed. viewed at HathiTrust). Those sections are unillustrated, and the advertisements with layout presumably by Kipling are non-pictorial. The new artwork by Leyendecker (cover, endpapers, frontispiece, interior) illustrate only the narrative, "With the Night Mail: A Story of 2000 A.D.", p3-59 --so fashioned p[2], which may perhaps be interpreted as the first section title page.
• As published in the late 1909 collection (UK/Canada eds. with identical interior apparently), p111-67, the "Extracts" span p143-67 and each section begins on a new page under the headings given here: • 143-45, Aerial Board of Control • 146-48, Notes • 149-52, Correspondence • 153-58, Review • 159-67, [Advertisements under no general heading] (from the Canada ed. viewed at HathiTrust). The US ed. uses the same arrangement in sections with different pagination (viewed at HathiTrust). Both eds. present the narrative under the long title.
