The editor explains how the stories chosen for the anthology reflect the popular thinking of the beginning of the industrial age as traditional roles and behavior underwent rapid change, in particular their attitudes towards and expectations of women, as filtered through the popular conceptions of witches, fairies, natural spirits, and "savages".
