The novel consists of 5 sections of novella size.
All 5 sections were previously released as novellas (1 novelette) with several title changes and some editing. The publications were
- Section 1: "Impact and Aftermath", 22,800 words, originally as "Terraforming Terra," Science Fiction Age, November 1998, 16,000 words, with 2 chapters added in the novel and other editing;
- Section 2: "Engineers of Creation," 21,000 words, originally as "Engines of Creation," Science Fiction Age, September 1999, 21,000 words, unchanged;
- Section 3 & 4: Released as novellas: "Agents of the Moon" and "The Ultimate Earth". The latter won both the Hugo Award (2001) and the Nebula Award (2001) for Best Novella.
- Section 5: "Farewell to Earth," 16,700 words, originally as "The Nth Step," Analog, January 2001, 17,000 words, same 8 chapters but some internal editing.
