First published in The Cornhill Magazine, 1896, as by Walter Ramal, according to Wagenknecht, the editor of Eight Tales. However, Giles de la Mare, editor of a complete edition of W. de la Mare's short stories, reports that he has looked at Cornhill Magazine and not found the story; he believes that W. de la Mare offered them the story in 1896 but they did not publish it.
