This translation (titled simply "The Horla") was first published in an edition of Maupassant's Complete Works published by M. Walter Dunne in 1903. The subtitle appeared (for the first time as far as is known to this editor) in Julian Hawthorne's Library of the World's Best Mystery and Detective Stories, first edition 1907.
