The Story of Doctor Dolittle

Hugh Lofting

First published 1948
Type Cover Art

Uncertain date (probably not 1st ed. 1st printing, August 1920)
  • Two or more illustrations by Lofting were used on the front cover or jacket of the novel in early printings of its 1st ed. (The Story of Doctor Dolittle: Being the History of his Peculiar Life at Home and Astonishing Adventures in Foreign Parts, Philadelphia: Stokes, 1920, 1st printing August). There were two printings in 1920, five in 1921, and perhaps more in 1922 prior to the first British edition.
  • Whether two illustrations were used during 1920, or even during 1921, is unknown here now. Online dealers and collectors, those who do provide images, give incomplete or inconsistent information. Wikipedia provides a cover image, simply as "first edition", probably relying on a single dealer at ABEbooks. Another dealer provides an image that appears to match, with description "Orange boards with faded blue lettering on spine and front, line drawings of sea creatures in blue paste down color picture on front." That paste-down illustration is "The Farewell Dinner", which is the frontispiece illustration in some eds/printings.
