The Voice of Science

Arthur Conan Doyle

First published March 1891
Type Short Fiction
Length Short Story

A gramophone recording of a famous scientist's lecture is to be played at a scientific exhibition at a family home. One of the family members decides to substitute a different record in order to send his sister a message she can't ignore.

Published anonymously in the Strand. Credit to Doyle based on Bleiler (and other resources). However, Bleiler mistakenly gave the title as "The Voice of Silence". Correct title confirmed by comparing Bleiler summary to the on-line scans of the Strand magazine and the Arthur Conan Doyle Encyclopedia.
