The Master of Ballantrae

Robert Louis Stevenson

First published September 1889
Type Novel

<br> During the Jacobite rising of 1745, the Durie family hedged its bets by having the two sons each join opposite sides of the conflicts. The elder, known as the Master of Ballantrae, has been forced to go into exile while the younger, Henry, has inherited the title--but this situation is all wrong and only gets worse when the Master secretly returns.

Published November 1888 to October 1887 as a 12-part serial in Scribner's Magazine, vols 3-5, with illustrations by {{a|William Hole}}; beginning vol 4, no 5, page 570 (viewed at HathiTrust). There are 10 full-page illustrations and no others, signed "WHole", with different engravers. They include frontispiece plates(?) of the January, April, and July 1888 issues.

Scribner's Magazine was published in both New York and London simultaneously or nearly so.

Speculative element: the Master apparently dies and returns to life several times in the novel, and it is revealed that this is a secret art he learned in India.
