Medical student Reuben Briggs, passing for white, is drawn to the Negro singer Dianthe Lusk by visions, then has the opportunity to awaken her from a deathlike mesmeric trance. His friend Aubrey Livingston (wanting Dianthe) intervenes and sends him on an expedition to Africa. There follows a plot full of secret identities, and the discovery of a hidden Ethiopian kingdom.
