According to Thomas Hahn, "the language and spellings of [The Turke and Sir Gawaine] indicate it was composed around 1500 in the North or North Midlands." It is a popular romance intended for public recitation. The extant manuscript version is in the Percy Folio (where it is mutilated and missing half the pages).
