- According to William Michael Rossetti (brother of DGR, editor of the magazine), Introduction to the 1901 facsimile reprint of The Germ (Gutenberg #17649, pp. 18-20): • This story was finished late in December 1849, for the inaugural issue of the magazine. • The privately printed 1869 pamphlet sometimes sold for "£10 and upwards". • The only substantial revision was the church at Pisa re-named "San Petronio", from the anachronistic "San Rocco".
