[Spoilers ahead]: The speculative elements in this work are limited to ghosts (the rather non-scary ones) which appear on a smaller number of pages only but are nevertheless an important part of the story. They initially seem to be hallucinations or symbols for guilt, but it later becomes apparent that they are more than that. They are definitely not psychological horror and also not "classic ghosts" as in haunted house stories. The genre "Slipstream" is probably the best choice to describe the way these ghosts appear in the story's mostly realism-based setting.
