First published in 1989 in The Chariton Review, according to acknowledgements page of Western Ghosts (1990), although the copyright page of Cady's collection The Sons of Noah & Other Stories (1992) gives the date as 1978; other online sites also say 1989, but The Chariton Review has been around since 1975 according to Wikipedia, so possibly the later issue reprinted the story or the 1978 date was just a mistake; further verification needed.
