Note in The Wave in the Mind: "From a talk given for the Emeriti Lectures at the Department of Anthropology of the University of California at Berkley, November 4, 1991. I rewrote the piece for a celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the department, November 16, 2001." At the head of the piece in The Wave in the Mind is "Indian Uncles / by Ursula Kroeber Le Guin"; presumably she signed this piece with her full middle name because it is about her father Alfred Kroeber.
