A girl with congenital defects born into a prominent family is built into a hyperspace ship which provides her with life support while her brain can handle the complexities of hyperspace navigation. On her first voyage when she carries five other young heirs of prominent families to their highly placed first postings, she overhears them discussing the kinds of corruption and graft they will engage in for their personal benefit; and a few years later she finds herself engaged in an undercover mission to bring them all to justice.
