Arthur Conan Doyle

First published 1908
Type Short Fiction
Length Short Story

The narrator is a tutor to the children of Sir John Bollamore. Sir John was a womanizer before being reformed by his wife, now deceased. But the tutor thinks his employer is not as reformed as he claims when he hears a woman's voice speaking in the old man's room.

A story which depends for a surprise ending on the reader not immediately thinking of a recording (the gramophone being new at the time). First published in the Strand Magazine, January 1899.
