Roger Dodsworth: The Reanimated Englishman

Mary Shelley

First published 1976
Type Short Fiction
Length Short Story

First published in Yesterday and To-Day by Cyrus Redding (T. C. Newby, 1863), vol. II, pp. 150-65; that is, in chapter IV, "Godwin—Story of Dodsworth, by Mrs. Shelley", pp. 149-65 (viewed at HathiTrust, below)

Shelley submitted the story in a September 1826 letter to The New Monthly Magazine, "during the widespread interest in Dodsworth". "Between 1821 and 1830 Redding effectively edited The New Monthly Magazine (owned by Henry Colburn, and nominally edited by Thomas Campbell)." --Wikipedia (multiple articles)

Redding's vol. II ch. IV begins with his preface to the story, in effect, which contains this much explanation of its appearance in his memoirs (page 150 viewed at HathiTrust): "I append here a story of hers given me for a particular purpose, many years ago, and long before her decease. I did not use it for the purpose originally intended, and I therefore print it in another place than that in which it was originally intended to appear. It remained some years mislaid, and I discovered it by mere accident, among a mass of papers."
