According to SFE3 this was initially planned as part of "The Forever War" but was rejected in that function by the editor of Analog; it was reinstated into the 1991 Avon Eos edition and maybe before 1988 into the Easton Press edition (there's a renewed 1988 copyright assignment to Haldeman in later editions). It forms the "Sergeant Mandella" section in the Avon edition.
