"Author's Note to "Author's Notes": Most people who read my mini-collection in Night Visions 4 heeded the listings on the table of contents and assumed I had contributed only six stories. Not so. The seventh was there all along, sneakily hiding in the form of a series of "author's notes," a were-fiction if you will. I wanted to depict the sort of persona many readers of my acquaintance seem to assume must belong to the typical horror writer. Or maybe, as one reviewer suggested, I've too blurred the line between author and creation. I don't know about you, but that scares the hell out of me. I haven't ritually sacrificed a small, cute animal in just ages." (postscript in The Best Fantasy and Horror 1).
