"New Writings in S-F 3" saw the first publishing of this story, as John Carnell states in his Foreword: "All but one of the stories have never been published before—in fact most were written specially for this series. The sole exception, Frederik Pohl's "The Fiend", will not have been read by many regular S-F readers, as it originally appeared in Playboy, [...]". Several websites (see links above, for example) state a publishing date as 1964 either without substantiation, or by misattribution; the only verified first publication being that of "New Writings in S-F 3", dated correctly here as 1965.
