First appeared in the 1909 collection "The Ghost Pirates, A Chaunty, and Another Story", which see for details. Note that some secondary sources claim that it was first published in The New Magazine, January 1912. The text was revised and much expanded, probably 1913 or 1947 (ForgottenFutures.com states 1948, where 1947 is the year commonly reported for the expanded collection. FF also admits ignorance of the 1913 text.)

Forgotten Futures (forgottenfutures.com, above) presents "both versions; there are major differences between them." The revised version is more than 50% longer than the original.

This is the first story in both the 1913 and 1947 collections--perhaps all collections prior to Project Gutenberg Ebook #10832 (2004), which follows the 1910 and 1912 magazine sequence. Gutenberg #10832 contains the revised/expanded text of this story, however.
The introduction in volume 2 of "The Collected Fiction of William Hope Hodgson" incorrectly claims that this story "was not published until January 1912".
