A Native American of Eskimo origin is trying to escape to Canada, after evading the US Army base he was located into. He is a Gulf War veteran who is pursued by recurrent dreams of a grisly bear in a field covered with dead bodies. Eventually he meets a pack of wolves being hunted by a two-men team in a helicopter, and that triggers new war memories that compels him to take action. The story tries to stay in a borderline between a contemporary fantasy explanation, and a "mental" explanation for the soldier's act.
Contemporary fantasy short story published in the ConAdian Souvenir Book, edited by Jon Gustafson.
