According to "A Note About the Story" in Kate Culhane: A Ghost Story , Curtin transcribed this and other Irish folktales which were published in the "New York Sun" Sunday Supplement in 1892-1893; this story also was published in his Tales of the Fairies and the Ghost World: Irish Folktales from Southwest Munster.
