From the first page of the Signet first printing: "War against space - This is the thrilling science-fiction story of a group of skilled scientists who set out in the space ship Beagle to explore the secrets of the universe, and soon find themselves engaged in a desperate struggle for survival.
Countless light-years from home, far out among the stars, they encounter weird forms of life that surpassed their worst nightmares - a tentacled, cat-like monster that fed on living beings; a race of bird-like creatures with hypnotic powers, an evil and terrifying Thing that could pass through solid matter and sought to make the ship its home.
in their desperate battles with these formidable forces, the explorers found basic flaws in their earthly sciences. And when the one man among them who knew the right answers was prevented from using his knowledge, he discovered that in space - as on earth, man can be his own most dangerous enemy!"

Fixup novel with:
 • Chapters 1-6: "Black Destroyer" 1939
 • Chapter 7: linking material
 • Chapters 8-12: "War of Nerves" 1950
 • Chapters 13-21: "Discord in Scarlet" 1939
 • Chapters 25-28: "M33 in Andromeda" 1943
Icshi notes: "most of the scenes featuring Grosvenor and Nexialism were newly added" to the novel. Grosvenor was not in the two earliest stories "Black Destroyer" and "Discord in Scarlet". He was added into the retelling of those stories and his role in the content from "M 33 in Andromeda" is much more significant. Grosvenor is the main character in "War of Nerves", but even with that Novelette being published earlier the same year, there are significant changes in the novel version of those events. There is also additional content added to the novel, particularly involving Grosvenor and the rest of the crew, and in particular between Grosvenor and Kent who is the Grosvenor's nemesis amongst the crew.
