First published in The Gold and the Grey, Roy A. Squires, 1974.
This poem is very similar to another Howard poem, "Echo from an Iron Harp". "Echo" has one additional line: "And the raven came and the lean grey wolf, to follow the sword's red play". Word differences include "Appian Gate" in "Echo" vs. "Roman Gate" in "Gold", and "mist" in "Echo" vs. "fog" in "Gold" among others.
